Padre Island Snorkeling
South Padre Island Snorkeling offers you a chance
to try out a fun sport for the whole family. This sport is popular with
the whole family because it is easy to learn and does not
require really sophisticated equipment. All that is needed is a
mask, snorkel and fins and you are set.
One of the most intriguing options for snorkeling
in South Padre is the opportunity to see a wide variety of
fish in the Laguna Madre Bay. The types of fish that can
be found include stingrays, herring, redfish, crab, black
drum, snapper, eels, shark, jelly fish, snook, perch,
catfish, trout, gar and many others. Kids really like to see
these fish along with turtles and other aquatic
wildlife.

Tips
To help you with your snorkeling, we have included
a few snorkeling tips to help make things go more
smoothly.
Recognize these are only a guide and you should rely on your
instructor’s advice for more specific tips and
techniques:
1.
Make sure equipment is snug. The mask and fins should
fit well. Test
them out beforehand. Remember poor fitting
equipment results in a less enjoyable trip.
2.
Practice breathing with snorkel
beforehand.
While snorkeling, especially for beginning snorkelers, it
can be easy to forget breathing. For this reason, a little
practice beforehand helps to remind you when the action
starts.
3.
If out of air, take off snorkel and get
air. Do not
be proud here.
If you have run of air, lift your head above water and get
some air without the snorkel.
4.
Swimming while snorkeling tip. Fins should never reach
above the water surface. If they stay below you
will be able to swim better and be less likely to disturb
the aquatic wildlife.
5.
Resist the urge to move about. Snorkeling is a spectator
sport that favors those who just relax. By moving about you will
alarm the fish and other wildlife. Instead, minimize your
movement and you will be rewarded with better
viewing.
South Padre Island Snorkeling is a great way to
get the entire family in the water and experience a rare
sport that offer a look at South Padre under water. One
final tip would be to take some basic lessons to help you
get the hang of it. These are inexpensive and are a great
help at teaching the basics of snorkeling and what to do
when things go wrong. This training can give you confidence
which will make your snorkeling trip even more enjoyable.
